MoveOn: Fahrenheit 9/11

MoveOn: Fahrenheit 9/11 National Town Meeting

The release of director Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 in June, 2004 shattered box office records for documentary films. Moveon needed a way to channel the excitement surrounding this movie into concrete action for sympathetic participants in the democractic process around the country, and they wanted the experience to be as personal as possible.

Clusters of participation on the West Coast

“Stamen’s work with us vividly illustrated the truly nationwide reach of MoveOn’s effort and membership. The interactive space helped us find a new way to engergize and motivate people to commit to direct political action. And the sense of community generated by having thousands of our members in the same online space at the same time was both tangible and inspiring to everyone involved.”
—Eli Pariser, Executive Director, MoveOnPac.org

Stamen developed a live, map-based, interactive Q&A session that allows thousands of people to communicate visually via a moderated discussion. In addition to an audio stream of MoveOn staff in conversation with Moore, visitors logging on could “see” themselves and their submitted questions on the map, along with those of other MoveOn community members. Michael Moore, along with MoveOn directors Eli Pariser and Adam Ruben, responded to active polls and answered questions from the online audience. The effect was compelling and empowering.
