Generated Image studies, for Shotgun Magazine
These studies were generated using scanned flowers (always dear to our hearts here at Stamen), iterated over time in different ways. The idea is that digital authoring tools like Flash can be used to force a collaborative work process with the machine: set up some rules, tweak their parameters, and see what comes out the other side.
It’s what Malcolm McCullough calls “directed design,” a rapid prototyping process that allows for a greater richness and variety in outcomes that would otherwise be available.
