Ed Ruscha’s Streets of Los Angeles for The Getty
Combining art and archive for an interactive publication

We designed a digital publication experience focused around scholarly work pertaining to the processes of archiving at the Getty Museum. From a cohesive overall design system for the publication itself, to co-authoring essays to be published within, to maps and visualizations for deepening our understanding of the archive, Stamen collaborated with the Getty to produce an engaging and durable artifact.
In the final piece of this collaboration, we developed 3 distinct “flipbook” experiences that would allow readers to contextualize the Getty archive geographically, learn more about the geotagging of the archived photographs, and discover stories that would have been impossible without computer vision tagging of the imagery. Ed Ruscha’s Streets of Los Angeles is available in paperback here.
