Visualizing Open Spaces for the Peninsula Open Space Trust

The Living Landscape Initiative Partners have been protecting open spaces for people and wildlife in the South San Francisco Bay Area since the start of the 20th century. With over 235,000 (!) acres of protected lands, 700 (!) miles of streams, 60 (!) square miles of redwood habitat, and 250 (!) miles of trails protected by the Peninsula Open Space Trust, it’s clear that this group is one of the main forces behind keeping this part of the world so eye-poppingly beautiful and vibrant, and we we’re grateful to have had them ask us to help them design their most recent report about their Living Landscapes Initiative.

The report focuses on POST’s four areas of interest and engagement: Working Lands, Waterways, Pathways and Wildlife. We designed the branding and overall look of the report, as well as the maps and data visualizations that help communicate the reach of POST’s work in each of these areas.

We also looked at the individual projects that each of these areas cover, from the Highway 17 Tunnel in Santa Cruz to the Cotoni Coast Daries (now a National Monument—thanks, Obama).

Projects like these are too big and multi-faceted to be the work of any one group, and like so much else of what happens in the Bay Area, many different constituencies come together to make change happen. The project covers the vital work of the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, The Nature Conservancy (whom we’ve worked with before, Visualizing Urban Watersheds), the Peninsula Open Space Trust, the Save the Redwoods League, and the Sempervirens Fund.

You can read more about the report here.
